1st Call for Abstracts | "Closing the Gap"

There is a vast disparity as regards the accessibility and affordability of services for individuals with autism around the world adversely affecting quality of life and the chance of reaching individual potential. The World Autism Organisation (WAO), where possible aims to facilitate opportunities where better resourced service providers, professionals and families can share their wealth of knowledge, experience and support with those in seriously less fortunate situations.


With this in mind as we endeavour to "Closing the Gap", the WAO invites, individuals with an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), related family members, professionals and service providers to submit abstracts for consideration and peer review, to be included in the 2018 congress.


ASC (Autism Spectrum Condition) in this instance includes autistics, persons with autism, individuals with autism, autistic person/individual and Autism Spectrum, neurodiverse population.


Preference during the selection process will focus on:

  • Provision of practical and achievable applications and advice - putting theory into practice
  • Proven effective methods of inclusive, as well as home-based educational strategies
  • Development of skills for meaningful employment & encouragement of such in the public work place
  • Developing independent life-skills for people with an ASC
  • Understanding and working with the physiology of Autism Spectrum Conditions (such as genetics, biochemistry, environmental factors, dietary, neurological and medical)
  • Creation and sustainability of service provision
  • Current and emerging research


 

Topics may include but are not limited to:

 

  • Rights and legal Issues;
  • Diagnosis;
  • Genetic and environmental factors;
  • Psychology and sensory issues;
  • Biochemistry and metabolism;
  • Education and teaching;
  • Health and co-morbidities;
  • Services and support for all ages and abilities;
  • Personal accounts;
  • Other relevant Issues.


Guidelines for Submission:

  • Max 300 words;
  • All submissions must be in English;
  • Full title of Presentation;
  • Full name of author(s) as well as their affiliation;
  • Preference for oral or poster presentation;
  • Contact email address;
  • Biography of presenter(s), maximum of 150 words each;
  • Abstracts must be strictly non-commercial in content. If subsequently it is found to be a commercial nature, it will be withdrawn from the programme with no reimbursement or compensation to the presenter;
  • Abstracts for poster presentations must also adhere to the above conditions;
  • Acceptance of abstract does not include registration, travel and accommodation costs.
  • Limit of (2) abstracts per user account


The members of the Scientific Committee reserve the right to make the final decision as to whether the submission will be accepted and whether it will be an oral presentation or a poster. No discussion will be entered into concerning the final decisions.
